Eeepc 900 Worth it?
May 10, 2008
I have been following the Eee Pc 900 recently, and thought it was a great deal. It’s supposed to come out in the United States this month, and I was thinking of purchasing one. But I have also been looking at the Ubuntu Linux line up too. The problem with the Eee PC 900 is that it is supposed to go on sale for $540 – $560 in the US. I can get a much more legit laptop from Dell for about the same price. Here is a comparison of the two laptops. Here are some Comparison charts I have created of the two laptops:
These are just a few of the comparison that show that for the same price you can get a much better deal with buying the Ubuntu Dell Inspiron 1525. The onlythign that the Eee pc has wich the Dell Inspiron does not have by default is a built in web cam. But you can get a built in webcam on the Dell for an added $25 and its a 2 megapixel webcam makign it better then the Eee Pc default webcam. I think this is easily added when the two prices of the laptops are exactly the same….
But I guesse its up to the buyer to decide for themselves, but for me I would choose the dell with out a doubt!

A better comparison would be against the HP2133 running Suse.

I’d get the dell inspiron 1525 over the eepc too. It’s a bargain, but was also thinking that for an extra £150 probably go for the dell XPS M1330 ‘coz it’s a much sexier laptop with a 13.3″ screen & install Unbuntu 8.04 on that or buy it pre-installed.

The issue to be considered is that the EeePC is NOT meant to be a proper laptop – it is a supercharged PDA.
The EeePC is small and light and solid state. You can carry it around, chuck it around, shove it in the glove box. It will fit in a coat pocket and you can whip it out in McDonalds and surf the net.
If you are even asking the above question, then buy the Dell. The EeePC is great for what it is built for – and that is not to be a full blown notebook.

Isn’t the dell much much bigger and heavier?
Doesn’t it boot up much slower because it isn’t solid state?
Aren’t you comparing apples to oranges here?
I can get a desktop and flatscreen for half the money of the dell laptop.
Does that make the dell laptop obsolete? No it does not.
The point of Eee pc is that:
1- it boots really really fast (which is extremely important for a laptop)
2- it small enough to fit in your girlfriends pursue
3- it weight pretty much nothing
The eee pc competes against PDA’s if anything. Nobody would use the Eee pc as their primary computer. It’s the lightweight simply thing you use to work a little in the train or something. Or on vacatures.
I actually have a raincoat i live, where it just fits in a the pocket.
You didn’t get it, why people loved the Eee, did you?
