Dell Continues to Dance with Ubuntu
Dell a few years ago started offering the option of having Ubuntu linux pre installed on some of their machines. A lot of people were excited to ear this but when it happened, noticed that having Ubuntu vs Microsoft on the Dell computer didn’t slice the price of the computers as much as they had hoped.
Well now this has all finally changed with Dell offering there new laptop the Inspiron 15n with Ubuntu Linux. This new laptop is not a netbook and has great specs for an extremely low price of $299!!! The specs of the base $299 laptop are:
- IntelĀ® CeleronĀ® 585 (1MB cache/2.16GHz/667Mhz FSB)
- Ubuntu Desktop Edition version 8.10
- Glossy, widescreen 15.6 inch display (1366×768)
- 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 800MHz
- SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
- Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD
- 8X CD / DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive)
- Dell Wireless 1397 802.11g Half Mini-Card
Now if you ask me that is an amazing steal for a laptop and I see this as yet another stride on brining Ubuntu to the mainstream public.
If you would like to buy or customize the dell inspiron 15n check it out here on the Dell Website.

How Ultra-portable Laptops will help Linux
It seems the new hot market to get into is the Ultra-portable laptop market. They have actually been called a number of different things but I am going to stick with Ultra-portable laptops, because that seems to sound like it makes sense to me. Anywho The Eee pc was the first created by Asus and running Linux.
Since then the Eee pc has came out with a Windows xp version and many other ultra-portables are coming out with both Linux and Microsoft versions. So how does this help Linux?
Well when the Dell started selling Ubuntu laptops and computers some people were upset about how the price differences weren’t that big especially since Linux is a free operating system and Microsoft coasts hundreds. Well he answer to that is that Big companies like Dell buy Windows in bulk gettign a discount so they are only really paying for $50-$100 for the license on each computer they sell. Also all the junk software that comes pre-installed also helps offset the costs.
The $50-$100 price tag for the Microsoft operating system is not that big of a deal on a $1000+ laptop. But on a $300 laptop that is 1/6th or 1/4rd of the price….basically the cheaper the computer the more of a difference there will be in the price. The new trend of ultra-portable cheap laptops will help bring more Linux computers to the consumer market to the everyday people who may not have considered or even known about Linux otherwise.
I personally can’t wait to get my hands on an MSI Wind!

Yahoogle?
Could their be a Yahoo Google Partnership in the works? It seems that the Yahoo Microsoft thing is not exactly over yet. It seems like no Carl Icahn has bought 59 million shares of Yahoo stock and is going to try to get a new board of directories chosen who are more willing to sell Yahoo to Microsoft.
Yahoo executives are in alliance with Google, and this could be an oportunity to create a deal in advertising. To read more about the Google Yahoo Partnership check out Mashable.

Reasons to downgrade from Windows Vista to XP
Vista is not ready for the feint of heart. Although we all drool over its glassy smooth looks and effects, I think we all need to hold back from our instincts. The instincts of the tech consumer is to buy the latest and greatest, as the industry just keeps pumping new things out at us….
