Expono…Flickr Competitor

Is there finally a Flickr competitor out there? Flickr has been the top dog at least in my mind with photo hosting on the web for photo lovers and camer addicts alike. Anywho there is a yet another new photo hosting website, the first real good one I have seen in a ver long time and it is called Expono.

Expono interface looks great and has a ton of great features you can read on the Expono website here. The one feature that I loved when quickly tryign it oout today was the fact that you can tag people in pictures like you can on facebook with boxes aroudn the faces. This is one thing about flickr that I desperatley want people tagging.

I will keep this review short I always think it more fun to explorer yourself then actually read about soemthing. But oen thing I shoudl add, a free account on expono comes with one gig of space while you can pay $45 a year for a 10 gig account. Now Price wise this does not compare with Flickr, because with Flickr you get an unlimited accoutn for $25 a year. So I guesse you can do th emath vs features yourself.

Lastly unfortunetly Expono is in Private beta so you all cant rush to it but I so happen to snag an accoutn and also have a bunch of invites to give out!! yea I am better then Tech Crunch…ok jk thats a huge stretch but if you want an invite, post a comment make it funny or beg for an invite what ever you want to do, but I will pick my favorite comments and will award them with an invite to Expono. Contest will go for a few days or untill I give them all out.

Enjoy!

Joomeo Online Photo Storage

Here is yet another online place to store your photos. Un-like flickr I would compare Joomeo to a advanced version of Iphoto but online. The Joomeo interface reminds me a lot of what Iphoto looks like on the mac.

Joomeo

Joomeo is free and lets you upload an unlimited amount of photos but up to 150 megabytes a month. I have and 8 mega pixel camera and I am surprised how many photos I have been able to upload with my free account to Joomeo.

Joomeo also offers subscription accounts. A 500mb per month cap for 16 euros a year, a 1 gigabyte for 30 euros a year, and finally an unlimited for 120 euros a year.

Now the neat thing abotu Joomeo is it also allows you to upload movies to! Joomeo seems to be more centered around a place for you to store and organize photos and to share with your contacts. It is not as social as Flickr would be.

I may have to try and get used to this since I can;t seem to get myself a flickr pro account. I think flickr is better for my own needs…

Free Unlimited Photo Album Hosting

Yet anothe rphoto hosting site is on the net, it’s called TinyAlbum. Tiny Album like Photie has unlimited full size picture uploads for you to share pictures on the internet with. I use Photie for this blog to host photos, but what separates Photie and TinyAlbums are Albums.

TinyAlbums does exactly what it’s name implies, it allows for the creation of Photo Albums. You can upload any number of photos and organize them in Albums for sharing with friends and family. It differs from Photie, because I believe it is better to share pictures in Album form with friends. Photie is great for sharing single photos or for hosting blog pictures.

The photo Album viewer in TinyAlbum is a nice ajaxy photie viewer, that is quite simple. TinyAlbum to me is lacking in some features, like more privacy options and customization. Also the pages look kind of boring and are ruined by the html code it gives you below each picture if you want to host it. I wouldn’t say TinyAlbum is the prettiest way to share your albums with friends and family, but hey it is free. If you don’t like TinyAlbum of Photie, chek out Pixie!

Personally I still wish I had a Flickr Pro account!!

Where Do I host Photos?

As some of you know I have been having trouble trying to get myself a flickr pro account. But I still use a fair amount of images on this blog. So is anyone curios where I host them? Well I will let you all in on my free secret. I use a little sire called Photie:

Photie lets you host an unlimited number of photos which can be of any size! So pretty much my blog is set as long as Photie is around. Photie also lets you use how many views each photo receives, which can be of interest to the stats junky. The only problem I can see with Photie is if they for some reason fail and go out of business then all my photos in all my posts will disappear…..so lets all hope for the best of Photie!

Although I use Photie for my blog I am still hoping and praying to find away to get me a flickr account for all my personal photos to share with friends and family.

Recovering Files on Linux

I recently lost a lot of digital pictures by accidentally deleting them. Upon doing some research and a little bit of experimenting I recovered every picture I lost, and actually more…

First off if you need to recover pictures or any other file you have accidentally deleted you may want to read my first post to understand how you can get them back, and so you understand why you shouldn’t do anything that that would write anything more to your hard drive or flash drive you want to recover files from.

The first step in recovering your lost files is going to be have your media plugged in if its a flash drive, or external hard drive. If its your main hard drive then you obviously don’t need to plug anything else in.

Next you are going to want to install testdisk, this can be installed through a terminal with:

sudo apt-get install testdisk

This will allow you to use the terminal command photorec, but you will want to run it with root privileges so:

sudo photorec

This will bring up something like this:

in this first menu you want to select the drive you want to recover files from. The first one I have highlighted is 80 gigabytes, and is my computers hard drive. The second one is the option I will choose because I want to recover files from my camera flash memory stick. So I will highlight that option using my keyboards arrow keys and hit enter.

The next screen you will see is this:

On this screen you will need to select the partition type of the drive you are recovery files from. Pick it using the arrow keys again then press enter when its selected.

On the next screen you will pick which partition you want to recover files from on your drive, for my case I am using a flash card from my camera so it only has one partition:

The next screen you will need to choose the file system type that the files are on that you are trying to recover:

The next part is where you pick the destination of the recovered files to go after they are recovered. As you can see below I created an “output” directory earlier in my home directory to store all my recovered files. This is where I choose to have my recovered files placed:

That will then bring me into the output directory folder and I can type “y” to pick that as my output for recovered files. If you just want them in your home directory then you can just type “y” on the last page:

Now finally the file recovery will begin:

This read out tells you how many of each type of files were recovered and where they were saved. I stopped mine after a few seconds because I already recovered all my photos but it will keep going until it scans your whole device! This is a great tool, and a memory savor for those who accidentally delete important pictures!

A Good Online Place to store your Photos

The best part of photos is sharing them and preserving them. Photos are memories you want to last, and ones you want your friends and family to see. There are many photo places out there for you to share your photos, but they all have their pros and cons. The three main issues are cost, storage space, and the ease of sharing. Can you get the best of all three? The answer is yes you can…..
